The Rajagiri Institutions were born out of the educational vision of Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the founder of CMI congregation. Saint Chavara was a great educationalist and social reformer of the 19th century.The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious congregation of India with a membership of over 2500, renders its service to humanity in educational, social, health care and other activities aiming at the integral development of the society. The CMI vision for education places emphasis on the development of humane individuals, proficient, competitive and at the same time sensitive to the world around. The CMIs are spread throughout India and abroad in thirteen Provinces.

Presently the CMIs manage nearly 500 educational institutions across the country and offer academic programs that range from pre-primary to post doctoral levels. The CMIs strive towards establishing new systems, of high quality, in the field of education. A lot of emphasis is given to introducing educational programs in new disciplines, and this effort has been widely recognized and acknowledged. The CMIs have also done a lot of work in the field of special education, for the mentally and physically challenged.
